Cardiacs songs...that irritate you

Postby shiroihage » Thu Jul 29, 2010 17:02

Probably not the forum to be doing this, is it eh? But I recently re-acquainted myself with Heaven Born and re-realised what annoys me about some of the songs- the choruses don't stand up to their other stuff. For Good And All & She's Hiding Behind The Shed particularly stand out as excellent tracks that cry out for a better/ less irritating chorus.
I know...I know, it's like moaning that Shakespeare wrote a couple of not-so-good plays. Just trying to prompt discussion/ see what you all reckon.

I also think the Big Ship EP doesn't really cut it that much (compared to their other stuff) save for the first two tracks.

Am I wrong goddammitt??

"Angleworm Angel" irritates me...it is probably brilliant though.

'Goosegash' is the only one I can think of. I wouldn't say it irritates me it just sits uncomfortably in my ears. It's only a short song but I don't think I've listened to it all the way through in 20 years...

Dirty Boy.

Im not doing this to cause arguements or be contoversial. I know for 99% of peeps on here its one of their fav songs but i struggle to listen to it everytime :( Sorry

As the thread says im not saying its not a good song but this and Guns in general just does not do it for me.

Interesting responses...
The fact that most people can only think of one or two out of the hundreds Tim wrote is indicative of true brilliance. Try doing that with any other band.
Have to defend Dirty Boy. Truly epic, the way it builds... but I remember not really liking it so much on first few listens way back when. Tarred & Feathered I found irritating on first few listens but now really love (tho probably not one to initiate people with).

Come on other Maresnesters, confess your partial heresy!

I was a late arrival to the brilliance of 'Dirty Boy' too - in fact it wasn't until I saw them play it live that the true majesty of it sank in.

I didn't like 'Blind in Safety and Leafy in Love' much either. Love it now of course.

I've managed to convince the future Mrs Batesy that naming the tables after Cardiacs songs at our wedding is a good idea. 'Blind in Safety...' might be one of them. I'd quite like 'Dirty Boy' for our table but I don't think that's going to happen :toimonster:

I love that song ! it's one of the "conving others" songs I think... I usually play iy to those who like hardcore-punk and system of a down :D

There is not a single song that I don't like, but I never really liked all the sudden noises in Spinney... the first may be umpredictable, but then you already know what's happening... anyway, it's one of those song on my future cover lists, probably played very loud, with sudden silences and dreamy sounds instead of the Booms. :?:

Goosegash definitely, i'd go so far as to say i quite dislike it.

Guns... Dirty Boy... i think you need to give your ears a good clean out sparky. :)

Ha ha well if you dont like goosegash your ear may be a little mucky too

To be honest I have seen them do the tracks live and heard guns many times and its just down to taste. Some grow on you like HBaeb but guns just seems so ........ pah ! Im more a fan of the golden line up and albums they just have so much more character :)

Interestingly, during a battle of the stereos with the neighbour last night I played Cardiacs Live the Amsterdam one) and on came Goosegash. It sounded fvcking great! The whiskey may have helped.

It was great actually - played the whole thing REAlLY bloody loud. It was like being there except there were no crowds of sweaty, half naked men trying to knock me over. Well, not many.

There are some unfathomable opinions here! Isn't it weird/great how different we all are, while still all crouching under the same umbrella...
